Bite It Off And Chew It
When I look back as I have grown into adulthood over the last few years or so, I realise that my life has been a series of biting things off and chewing them. What I mean is that I have bitten off quite large and difficult portions of life and forced myself to chew and swallow them, if that makes sense.
These things are the occurrences in our lives such as a rent, a new job or a different career move. You grab something out of your apparent capability and definite comfort zone at the time and you go for it.
It is scary in the moment and, when I look back, I have been scared quite a few times.
Funny enough, though, a lot of times those moments and decisions have worked out and turned out well.
That is life and that is how growth happens. A lot of times there are things that I would like to do but they seem really difficult. There are things that we feel will challenge us too much.
“I want to do a podcast,” for example.
“I want to start taking videos.”
“I want to learn a new language or skill.”
But, it seems far-fetched and the words “I can’t” quickly pop into our heads because they love doing that.
Sometimes we just have to jump in and do; if we fail, we fail. We will learn and move on and do better next time.
So I have bitten off quite a lot, even when I felt I wasn’t ready. Then again, you rarely feel you are ready.
At the moment I have bitten a rental challenge. The rent is much more than I was paying before because I am now staying by myself and not sharing the place. It’s going to be a load for me but I already feel better in the environment.
It’s amazing having complete freedom; you just have to pay for it, I guess. So, I must work hard to make sure that I manage.
Obviously, you can’t bite too much but, then again, you will surely know if you are. An example is having a child. Surely as a thinking adult you can tell if you can afford to bring a baby into the world.
That’s an extreme example, but that’s also what we do as people. That’s just simply a case of not thinking things clearly, and making a rash choice.
There is nothing that we know
Tying into this topic is a conversation that I had yesterday. There is nothing that we know in life. Everything is learned. So, if you want to do something, you must just learn.
We were all once toddlers.
We didn’t know how to walk, we didn’t know how to talk, and we didn’t know how to write or play football. We learned them all. The problem is that as we grow older we begin to fear the process of learning, or looking foolish while learning.
There is very little in the world that we cannot achieve. Everything is there for us to do and attain, if we try.
